A Canon felismerte, hogy sok fotós szeretne DSLR-hez hasonló képminőséget, de kompakt stílusú házban, kiváló minőségű, nem cserélhető zoom objektívvel. A PowerShot G1 X-ben egy nagy, 4:3 képarányú, 14,3 megapixeles, 18,7 x 14 mm-es CMOS-érzékelő található.
